My daughter decided she wanted a Where the Wild Things Are party for her 5th birthday party. I was VERY excited about this theme, to say the least. I will admit I probably went a little overboard, but I had so much fun planning this party and making the decorations. I did a mix of both the classic Wild Things style, and the new movie version.

Magnets/Table Decorations
These were very easy to make. I bought glass beads sold for flower arrangements. They are flat on one side, rounded on the other. Then I printed out many tiny pictures of both my daughter in her crown, and Wild Things characters from the book. I traced around each glass bead, cut out the shape, and glued the paper to the bead. Some also had magnets attached to the back. Those went home with the kids in their favor bags.

Max and Monster centerpieces/Crafts
I saw these great painted cardboard Max and Monster figures on this blog. These served as both decorations and crafts for the kids. I painted most of each figure, and the kids used markers and colored pencils to draw Max’s face and the Monster’s shirt.

Cupcakes
I made 3 different kinds of cupcakes, all decorated with fondant. This was my first time using fondant, and I used a Marshmallow fondant recipe found online. The grass and fur were done with a grass frosting tip. My husband was ready to make an emergency run to the grocery store to buy cupcakes if things went awry, but to my surprise everything worked out! I am glad we did a trial run of the cupcakes a couple weeks before the party, because if we had not, he would have made that run to the store.

I planned on making a cupcake stand as well, but ran out of time. I ended up using a hat box and a gift-wrapped formula can. Worked just fine.

I made the crown out of fondant. I cut out a crown shape (freehand) and rolled it up into a cylinder to dry. Then I piped on the ’5′ with chocolate icing. The banner is just the characters printed out on cardstock paper with chopsticks taped to the back of them. I made the banner with ‘Happy Birthday Amelia’ in illustrator.

I love the table decorations/magnets idea. Did you use a special glue to make them?

  8. MetroMom on April 3rd, 2010 9:03 am

Nope. Just a little dot of plain Elmer’s glue. It dries clear.

I LOVE this party!! You did such an awesome job. How did you make the monster cupcakes? Are all of the face/horn pieces colored fondant?

  10. MetroMom on June 6th, 2010 10:11 pm

    Sheila:
Thanks! Yes, the monster pieces were done with colored fondant. I used Wilton gel icing coloring to dye the fondant. The eyes were cut out with the large round end of an icing tip, the nose teeth were cut out with an exacto knife, and the horn and nose were hand modeled. The nose was pretty difficult for me to do, which is why none of them look the same. And the eyeballs are piped on with chocolate icing.

The fur was done with a Wilton grass frosting tip and chocolate icing. I added some brown Wilton color to the chocolate icing to make it darker. Hope that helps!

on the glass beads – did you just glue the pictures on the bottom? and then attach the magnets?

  14. MetroMom on July 20th, 2010 7:56 pm

    Katie:
Yes, the pictures are glued face up onto the bottom of the glass bead, then I attached a magnet to the back.

Fab! Great ideas. My LO is turning 2 and loves the Wild Things… as did I from my childhood. Thanks for sharing.

Great idea! What type of games did you play?

  17. MetroMom on December 11th, 2010 8:44 pm

We did not have any planned games – the kids played in a playroom for a bit. The craft of painting the monster and Max was really the only planned activity. I did want to have a reading of the book, but we ran out of time.

Great ideas! I am so impressed. My little one has his 2nd bday in two weeks so I have started prepping and planning. I love the cupcakes. For games, we are doing two Where the Wild Things Are floor puzzles, coloring masks from a Where the Wild Things Are coloring book and using those for when we read the book. So hopefully those ideas help some of you. We are also constructing a 3-D tree and a boat from colored butcher paper. Hope those ideas help some of you! Cheers!

Did you find Where The WIld Things Are coloring books? Also, how did you make the little banner and characters on sticks attached tot he cupcakes?

  20. MetroMom on March 23rd, 2011 8:57 am

My daughter got a Wild Things coloring book for her birthday, and I think it came from Target. There are several websites where you can download and print coloring pages – just Google ‘Where the Wild Things Are coloring pages’.

For the characters and banner cupcake display, I enlarged and printed the characters on heavy cardstock and attached them to chopsticks. The banner was made in Illustrator.

  21. Christina on April 6th, 2011 6:32 pm

Very clever! Thanks for the magnet idea-so NEAT! Target has a whole line of Wild Things items right now (future planners: hurry, while supplies last!)- a book bag (using as gift bag), magnetic notepad, post-its, pencils, dry erase boards, stickers, sticker+forest scene…each item was only $1! I went crazy on the gift bags! :-) Add a clear bag of runts tied with a vine :-D So many great ideas out there!

Amazing Ideas! I’m about to tackle this theme for my son’s 3rd birthday this July. Since the theme isn’t something you can find supplies for at your local party city, I’m surfing the net for ideas. Thanks for posting yours!!

  23. Eliza on June 3rd, 2011 7:40 am

Thank you for all the great ideas, mommys! :)

  24. Kim on July 5th, 2011 1:44 pm

You have the best crown I have seen for this themed party….can I ask where you got them? Thank you in advance!

  25. MetroMom on July 5th, 2011 9:29 pm

Kim: It’s just a piece of poster board that I bought at Michael’s for about $.25. It was gold on one side, silver on the other, and I just drew the crown, cut it out, and taped it together. Very low-tech. :) I also cut out mini crowns from the same poster board, wrote the guests’ name on them and glued those to the favor bags. I didn’t get a picture of those.
