Spring Chick First Birthday Party
Filed Under Birthday, Decor | Leave a Comment
Metro Baby 2.0 just turned 1! Since she is a Spring baby, we decided on a Spring Chick theme.

Photo Banner
To make the banner, I bought a few sheets of 12″ x 12″ scrapbook paper in bright spring colors. I cut out 4 circles per page with scalloped pinking shears. Then I glued photographs onto the scrapbook paper. I ran a ribbon through slits on the sides of each circle. Viola.
Birthday Hat
I made this with a couple sheets of stiff felt, embroidery thread, and yarn for the pom pom.

Highchair Banner
I don’t know why I felt the need to decorate the high chair, but I had some scrapbook paper left over, and some photographs of the orange chick illustration.

Cake Pops
I found these on the most awesome baking site on the internet – Bakerella. Once I saw her Spring Chickens cake pops I knew I had to have a Spring Chick party theme. I did do a trial run on the cake pops, because I’ve never made them before. Good thing I did, because my first batch was awful! I did vanilla cake with vanilla frosting, and added the whole tub of frosting, as directed in the instructions. They were so sweet I couldn’t even eat them, and that says a lot because I’ll eat anything that is sweet. So, I tried again, this time with chocolate cake and chocolate frosting. I added just enough frosting to make the balls stick together – about 5 spoonfuls. They came out MUCH better.
Dipping took some practice. Good thing I had that entire batch of sickeningly sweet cake pops to practice with.
Decorated and ready to be eaten. I found a great orange metal bucket, put in some pieces of styrofoam, and stuck in all the cake pops.

Smash Cake
I cut out a stencil of the chick illustration from wax paper, and sprinkled some orange sugar crystals on top. This took a little practice too, and I had to try a few times to get it right. Not that the Birthday Girl would care.

Cupcakes
And because there is no such thing as too much cake, I made some cupcakes too. Decorated with the very cool ‘grass’ frosting tip.
The Birthday Girl approves of her cake. Happy Birthday Lily!

Where the Wild Things Are birthday party
Filed Under Birthday, Decor | 15 Comments
My daughter decided she wanted a Where the Wild Things Are party for her 5th birthday party. I was VERY excited about this theme, to say the least. I will admit I probably went a little overboard, but I had so much fun planning this party and making the decorations. I did a mix of both the classic Wild Things style, and the new movie version.

I now have this ‘Wild Things’ invitation for sale on the website. You can order it here.
Magnets/Table Decorations
These were very easy to make. I bought glass beads sold for flower arrangements. They are flat on one side, rounded on the other. Then I printed out many tiny pictures of both my daughter in her crown, and Wild Things characters from the book. I traced around each glass bead, cut out the shape, and glued the paper to the bead. Some also had magnets attached to the back. Those went home with the kids in their favor bags.

Download the .pdf of the marble pictures here. The picture size is approximately .77 inches square.
Max and Monster centerpieces/Crafts
I saw these great painted cardboard Max and Monster figures on this blog. These served as both decorations and crafts for the kids. I painted most of each figure, and the kids used markers and colored pencils to draw Max’s face and the Monster’s shirt.

Cupcakes
I made 3 different kinds of cupcakes, all decorated with fondant. This was my first time using fondant, and I used a Marshmallow fondant recipe found online. The grass and fur were done with a grass frosting tip. My husband was ready to make an emergency run to the grocery store to buy cupcakes if things went awry, but to my surprise everything worked out! I am glad we did a trial run of the cupcakes a couple weeks before the party, because if we had not, he would have made that run to the store.

Cupcake display
I planned on making a cupcake stand as well, but ran out of time. I ended up using a hat box and a gift-wrapped formula can. Worked just fine.
